Creating fertile soil for a Mediterranean vegetable garden with effective microorganisms.
Come visit us at the MGAP 2026 Gardening Fair.
A successful vegetable harvest begins with healthy, living soil. In this workshop, we will explore how to create fertile, biologically active soils adapted to the conditions of a Mediterranean garden, using... Effective Microorganisms (EM), fermentation and regenerative soil-building techniques.
We will address the soil fermentation as a first step towards successful horticultural production and explore how different biological processes can work together to transform organic matter into valuable resources for the garden.
We will combine several complementary approaches:
- Effective Microorganisms (EM) to support biological activity and fermentation processes
- Bokashi Composting to ferment organic matter from the kitchen and garden.
- Red worms to transform organic matter into nutrient-rich vermicompost
- Leaf soil to encourage a diversity of local microbial and fungal life
- Biochar as a stable habitat for microorganisms and as a long-lasting soil amendment.
- Terra Preta -inspired soil building (Amazonian Dark Earth).Combining organic matter, microorganisms, and biochar to create rich, fertile, and biologically active soils.
We will also explain how to do fermented compost made from organic matter collected in the garden itself., transforming leaves, trimmings and other plant waste into a valuable resource, instead of simply considering them as garden waste.
The workshop will explore how these techniques can be combined to create a living soil system, capable of increasing fertility over time, reducing dependence on external resources.
The goal is to present participants with practical ideas and techniques that they can start using immediately to improve their... soil structure, microbial diversity, water retention and fertility, making better use of the organic resources already available in the garden.
Join us to discover how fermentation, microorganisms, biochar, and practices inspired by Terra Preta can help us build fertile and resilient soils for productive Mediterranean gardens.
